Easy DIY Nerf Targets

“I’m bored.” To a parent, these two words are like nails on a chalkboard. Normally we’d say the appropriate response is “I’m not your freaking cruise director,” but if you want to fire up some family fun, break out the Nerf blasters. These easy DIY Nerf targets can be thrown together in 30 minutes or less.

We’d like to add that we don’t care how old you are: all of these are age appropriate for kids and man-children alike. Kids. Teenagers. Roommates. Bachelors. Middle-aged dudes living their mom’s basement. We dare you not to have a good laugh and a good time.

5 Easiest DIY Nerf Targets

DIY Spinning Nerf Target

1. Spinning Nerf Target

What you need:

Large cardboard box

  • Paper plates
  • Bamboo skewers
  • Plastic straws
  • Tape (duct tape or electrical tape work best)
  • Spare change (pennies, dimes)

This is the most complicated of the “easy Nerf targets,” but well worth the minimal effort because the spinning feature means you don’t have to reset the target after play. You can also reuse the target since it folds and stores well.

Cut a large cardboard box so it will prop itself up (note: the boards at the base in the image, you will still need two heavy objects in the front and back to stabilize it when you shoot). Draw targets on the front of the plates. Cut windows so that the paper plates have room to spin. Tape the straw to the back of the paper plate. Thread the skewer through the straw. Tape each end of the skewer so it’s going across the backside of the window, which should be slightly wider than the plate. Strategically tape a penny or two to the back of the plate as needed for weights/balance. Fire away!

DIY Hanging Nerf Target

2. Hanging Nerf Targets

What you need:

  • string , twine
  • plastic or paper cups
  • tape (painter’s tape works best)

Optional:

  • PVC pipe

Doesn’t get any easier -- or cheaper -- than this! The PVC pipe is optional if you’d like to create a more official standalone target that can be used again and again. Otherwise, simply punch holes the bottom of the cups. Cut the thread in various lengths and thread it through the cups, knotting the thread inside the cups so they hang. Use the painter’s tape to hang the targets from a doorway or the ceiling. We suggest painter’s tape because it won’t damage the walls or trim of our home when you remove them. Fire away!

DIY Nerf Shooting Gallery

3. Nerf Shooting Gallery

What you need:

  • Cardboard box
  • Tape
  • Figurines (toy soldiers pictured here)

Such an easy Nerf target setup. This project can also be easily stored and reused. To make, tape the box shut. Cut six windows in the box, slice down about 1 inch and fold the cardboard to create the ledge on the bottom of each window. Place figurines in each window. Make sure the back of the box is supported by a wall or a heavy object. Fire away!

DIY Pool Noodle Nerf Target

4. Pool Noodle Nerf Targets

What you need:

  • Pool noodles (depending on length, 6 should do it)
  • Tape (duct tape, electrical tape -- something strong)
  • Two (2) 6 ft. gardening stakes

A fun summer backyard Nerf target. You could get creative with this idea: expand the wall of targets, make different colors worth different points. Call out a target before you shoot it. To build, securely tape each pool noodle into a circle. Tape the six circles together in two rows of three. Plant the stakes firmly in the ground, the same width apart as the pool noodles. Tape the sheet of pool noodle hoops to the stakes. Fire away!

DIY Nerf Target Golf

5. Nerf mini-golf

    What you need:

    • Cardboard box
    • Golf balls

This is a great idea for those looking for a more challenging Nerf target. You could set this up with obstacles in the way, like an actual miniature golf course if you wanted to. First, cut off the flaps of the box. Cut rectangles of various widths. Place the golf balls in front of the box and take aim and fire to move them towards the target.
